Debate Over Bicycle Lanes in Richmond

Posted on July 15th, 2014

With debate churning over the proposed bicycle lanes on Floyd Avenue in the fan, here is a quick reminder that bicycle riders must abide by the same traffic laws as motor vehicle drivers.  This is expressed in Va. Code § 46.2-800, which states:

“Every person riding a bicycle, electric personal assistive mobility device, electric power-assisted bicycle, moped, or an animal or driving an animal on a highway shall be subject to the provisions of this chapter and shall have all of the rights and duties applicable to the driver of a vehicle…”

“[T]his chapter” refers to chapter 8 of Title 7 of the Virginia Code which deals with Regulation of Traffic.

There is a meeting to discuss the plan on Tuesday, July 15 from 6:30-8:00pm at the Virginia Historical Society at 428 N. Boulevard.
